UGH I LOVED INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE SO VERY, VERY MUCH.

For context, though I’ve been meaning to read some Miles Morales and also Spider-Gwen comics forever, I’ve done none of these things; the only spider-person I have any history at all with is Silk (who I love A VERY LOT).

I also had watched/looked into very little about this movie — though the little I had seen made me sure I’d want to see it — so everything about it felt like STEPPING INTO AN EXPERIENCE. The animation was so, so well done, and so engaging, and so inventive.

More than anything, this movie made me cry approximately 4-6 times (I mean, there are a couple that could count as one cry or two, depending on how you want to split it — a lot depends on your definition here) and I was fully invested the entire time and I really, really loved Miles. And also, like, everyone? Which is very rare, and pretty much the barometer for how much I’ll like a movie, generally.

The scene where we got to see Miles come into his powers and do the classic Spider-Man Swinging Through Skyscrapers TM scene was so wonderful. (And I cried.) I’m also fully obsessed with his suit.

Oh, boy. That Stan Lee cameo, too. Everyone in the theater just took a collective breath together. (I’m gonna assume “I cried” is a given. Also, I’m tearing up again thinking about it as I write this, but that’s really neither here nor there.)

I’ve realized at this point I’m kind of just recounting the movie via my tears, so let’s continue that trend: fuck, Peter’s death. They did an incredible job making that matter — I mean, I know many people have some sort of attachment to Spider-Man, and he already exists in the public consciousness, so they had a head start, but the way (so soon into the movie!) they depicted the ramifications of it — witnessing the community he left behind, his impact and their grief — was so well orchestrated.

Oh, and I cried during the final monologue, thinking about kids watching this and hearing that they, too, could put on the mask.

And finally: I somehow had no idea Nic Cage was gonna be in it, so that was quite a turn for me.

OK, I lied, last very important thing: I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE SPIDER-GWEN SPINOFF GIVE IT TO ME IMMEDIATELY
